The World Bank chose Korean-American, Kim Yong Kim as its new president, maintaining the US hold on the position and leaving developing countries questioning the selection process. Kim, 52, assumes his role on July 1 when the bank's current president, Rovert Zoellick, steps down. Most leaders of the World Bank are politicians, bankers or diplomats however, Kim is a physician and anthropologist. His competition for the job was the finance minister of Nigeria, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and unlike previous elections the decision among the 25 member board was not unanimous with emerging economics such as Brazil and South Africa backing Okonjo-Iweala. President Barack Obama maintained that the process was transparent however former Colombian finance minister, Jose Antonio Ocampo, withdrew from the race stating that the process had become highly political and South African Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, expressed concern the election process was not fully merit-based. The United States has always held the presidency of the World Bank since its founding in 1944 while its sister institution, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has always been led by a European (currently Christine Lagarde).
